If you don't know me at all or haven't acquired from some of my other blog posts the environment is something I am deeply passionate about. With our world changing more and more by the year, our environment is something that's suffering from the effects of globalization. However, whilst environmental issues become more prevalent in our society it doesn't seem that they're widely recognized and many aren't educated on issues such as climate change, global warming, or the one that I want to focus on today...ocean acidification.
Ocean acidification is one of many environmental issues that exist in our society, and to learn more about it I decided to go on an expedition. Well, a research project.
I was fortunate enough to be accepted into a program called Lumiere Education. Lumiere is an online world class cutting edge- research program that gives students all around the world opportunities to dive into topics of research with a PhD mentor and explore a topic of their choosing.
I was able to participate in the summer cohort of Lumiere and spent nearly 8 weeks researching ocean acidification. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to research oceans and aquatic life but with the help of my mentor I narrowed down my research focus to the effects of ocean acidification on the Pacific Northwest area. My main goal was to communicate what ocean acidification is and why it's so harmful.
I spent nearly 8 weeks conducting research which included long internet rabbit holes of data and long hours creating visual figures and conducting literature reviews for papers and studies. The research process wasn't easy, I spent so much time creating the work and tearing it apart to make it better or more concise. But the 20 pages I was able to put together are 20 pages that I'm not only incredibly proud of but also 20 pages that I believe truly represent the crisis that is ocean acidification.
Overall the point I'm trying to make is, our environment is incredibly valuable and important. Our oceans, forests, you name it are essential to living life the way we do now. As our world changes and our environment changes with it, take time to educate yourself on processes and crises that are affecting the environment that you live in but also that in environment that future generations for years to come will live in too.
